Not everyone agrees with the odds. But new laws across the nation are rolling the rules back — and lawmakers think they’re holding a royal flush.

“In sports gambling, it’s about the bet,” DeGaris said. To put that into further context, Americans accounted for nearly 10 percent of the entire $33 billion worldwide online gaming market,” Freeman said.

To prevent unauthorized access, Virgin Casino physically locates gamers’ cellphones periodically. Chris Christie validated the vice in the waning weeks of 2013, saying he hoped to rake in $1 billion in casino revenues this year, of which the state will collect a 17 percent tax.

Freeman said the Department of Justice has relaxed its views toward online gambling since 2011, and this could open up even more opportunities in the U.S. That doesn’t translate online,” DeGaris told FoxNews.com. Not just poker.”

Many Americans simply ignored the ban, he noted, as the country did during Prohibition in the ’20s.

But analysts are mostly rolling with Christie and the casinos. “Blackjack and poker have a very human element that’s lost online. will generate – in addition to tax revenue from the proceeds at casinos – approximately 22,000 new online gambling-related jobs, Freeman testified.

. Virgin could be holding a full house, but it could also fail before the flop.

And New Jersey isn’t alone; eight other states have bills in the works that will allow Internet gambling as well. Nevada and Delaware also began offering some online gambling last year, but New Jersey is the first state to “fully” legalize it, said Lee Fenton, the chief operating officer of Gamesys.

Globally, the business is even more lucrative. will catch up to the rest of the world and allow it at some point.”

“Slots and roulette are very visceral games, lots of bells and whistles. “The federal government has tried the prohibition approach – specifically the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 and the Wire Act – and through multiple Justice Department crackdowns on offshore operators as well.”

Congress banned online gambling in 2006. They play against the house at Virgin Casino, and they can finance their wagers with debit cards, credit cards, or in person.

“Prohibition simply does not work,” Geoff Freeman told a House panel on Dec. “The technology is rolling out this week.”

“It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out,” said Laurence DeGaris, associate professor of marketing at the University of Indianapolis and an expert in Internet culture.

What happens online, stays online

Gaming and gambling in the United States have undergone a great boom. There has been an explosion in opening Native American casinos. That is, a gaming activity could turn out to be gambling where applicable laws regulating that particular gaming are violated. During the past decade most states have expanded legalized gaming, including regulated casino-style games and lotteries. The two words are not mutually exclusive. The word “gaming” is usually reserved for those instances where the activity has been specifically legalized by applicable laws or where the activity is exempted from the criminal laws. For example, playing a card game for money in a purely social setting where no one earns anything from the game other than as a mere player would be gaming if such social games were excluded from the reach of the criminal anti-gambling laws in the state where the game takes place.

Nevada casinos hit by massive losses

“But gaming is lagging. That’s why we’re losing money.”

It’s a trend that began with the Great Recession in 2008. But spending on actual gambling is way down, according to Mike Lawton, senior research analyst for the Gaming Control Board. He said that Vegas expect to have 42 million visit in 2016, which would be a record. Things hit bottom in 2009 when the industry posted a staggering loss of $6.8 billion. “Basically, gaming (revenue) hasn’t quite caught up and non-gaming is leading.”

The good news is that the industry’s losses have been narrowing every year, and Lawton is optimistic that the Nevada casino industry will start making money again this year. Nevada’s 271 casinos collected a hefty $24.6 billion in fiscal year 2015 (which ended June 30,) according to the state’s Gaming Control Board. That’s up from $21 billion in revenue for 2010.

Nevada’s casino industry lost $662 million last year, and has been in the red consistently for six years.
